Learning opportunities from the Susquehanna Valley to the Rhine Valley

If you’re fascinated by the German people and their language, you can make that passion an exciting part of your life and career. Germany’s economy is one of the strongest in the European Union, and German is one of its three official languages. When you enroll in German studies, you improve your career opportunities here and in the global marketplace.

You’ll enjoy active learning in dynamic classes with professors who help and support you. Write and perform skits, host radio shows featuring international music and take field trips to museums in New York City and Washington, D.C. Study with a Fulbright Language Fellow from Germany who will introduce you to unique cultural activities. Steer your career path in fresh directions by combining German studies with business, communications, history, education, international studies, the sciences or an interdisciplinary minor. Spend a semester in a German-speaking country, where you’ll master the language while boosting your cultural understanding and your confidence. You can even tailor your semester abroad to suit your own personal goals. For example, one student worked with an international team in a medical laboratory at the famous Charite’ Hospital in Berlin.

Once you’ve earned your degree, you can teach, become an interpreter or translator, enter the travel industry or work for the government, international nonprofits or a multinational company. There’s no telling where the German language might take you. Pair your degree with economics, and you might even end up at the annual summit in Davos, where German is the main language.

“In the German studies degree program, I was invited to complete departmental honors research.  The curiosity I needed to bring to this large research and essay-writing project continues to be an asset to me as I work in scholarly publishing, which requires a commitment to promoting scholarship and enriching scholarly and cultural conversation, and to producing worthwhile, challenging and culturally stimulating books.”
